I changed the thumbnail size from 500 to 256 but the thumbnails are still 500 wide. So where is the mistake?

Delete the img_thumbnails directory's content. A 'delete thumbnails' button will be added soon.

You must change the thumbnail size at nede-type level (administer/content/content types/blog foe example)
