Initial patch is attached. Not fixed the "ugly ugly ugly" issue.

Does that else if statement just need to be deleted, or is there more to it?

The else if can be deleted, as can the hook_help (4.7 material even). The patch in #1 lacks a way for the admin to configure flatcomments for node types.

Committed a modified patch to 6.x-1.x-dev, already useable, but still needs a bit of work for a proper release.
