(together with the reference field)

The "Reference options" box controls whether or not an additional text entry field shows up below the reference select list (thus allowing entry of arbitrary content). I think the text entry box you are referring to is the description field, which is thus far mandatory.

maybe Nothing is a bit misleading
and another word should be used instead
