Have you checked out the Gallery 2 Integration group?

Thilo has a document there that maps out G2/D6 integration future. It depends a lot of how much help he gets and how long it takes for other modules to be developed for D6

An official release of the gallery module doesnt depend on the future of G2 integration as outlined on g.d.o. The advanced modules for tighter integration will be maintained in a separate project: Gallery Addon.
I'm currently on vacation and will continue to work on the module on return. A 6.x release should be ready in about 4 weeks (I never promised ;)) At least the -dev version should be stable enough for migration then.

I have been pausing from Drupal development for some time due to job-related workload. But now I'm back. We are getting closer to a stable release for Drupal 6 and Gallery 2.3. However, as long as G2.3 is not released there shouldnt be an official release of gallery module either IMO. Waiting for this to happen, I encourage everybody to try the G2.3 nightly builds with 6.x-1.x-dev version of gallery module and report any issues to the queue.

The G2 devs are getting closer to a RC of G2.3. I will create an official release for gallery module once G2.3 is released stable and people are not reporting major issues within a 2-3 weeks timeslot after this.
