I'm having an infuriating problem with my site, http://wingedhearts.org . It seems to work flawlessly on Opera and Firefox, but with Internet Explorer, after exploring the site a bit, it suddenly shows a page as completely blank. From then on, that page will never show as anything but blank until you clear the browser cache.

The problem is erratic, but the page most susceptible seems to be The Sticky Beak. Click it a few times in the Navigation menu and it will most likely go wrong.

I am completely fogged as to even start to look for this problem. My theme is Garland, modified only to the extent of altered graphics and colours, and the following added fields in the style.css file:

.empty-style td, .empty-style th, .empty-style tr, .empty-style tbody, .empty-style table {
border: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
padding-left: 0px;
padding-right: 0px;
line-height: normal;
font-size: normal;
height: 0px;
margin: 0 0;
}

.empty-style img {
line-height: 0;
margin-top: 0;
}

I use these to display some preformatted blocks without getting messed up. I don't think this is the problem.

All assistance greatly appreciated!!
Ron.

I am able to reproduce the problem using Internet Explorer 6. When I view the source of the blank page, it's a different DOCTYPE declaration and character set, and it seems pretty certain to me the page is not generated by Drupal, but rather by the server itself. Perhaps your web host can assist with the problem.

Thanks Themphill. The site is hosted by Godaddy, and it has (seemed to) work fine so far. I'll contact them and see if I can make any headway. My original thought was that some problem in the drupal output was causing IE to 'jam' somehow. If it is the server, though, I am at a loss as to why it doesn't happen with any other browser. Surely something in the original page must act as a trigger somehow? I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again,
Ron.

I happened across this trying to find a solution for myself. I find that if I change the theme, and then change it back, it seems to fix up the problem. I am no expert, but that tells me we have a caching issue.

What is happening is that Firefox is flawless, but IE...well...not so much. The user either gets a blank page, or a partial page. However, I change the theme to the standard BlueMarine, submit it, then change it back to my theme, and all of a sudden IE works fine.

If I do any changes to the site at all, IE seems to get all confused again. So I have been doing the theme changing thing daily for the last week or so while I try to find a solution.

I wonder if this is to do with the hosting provider? (I am with Godaddy.) I'll try your trick and see if it helps.

I didn't try your solution in the end because I was worried about the effect of the change of theme on a working site. But I turned off caching instead, and the site immediately worked, even on an IE browser that had already got itself blocked. So however unlikely, it seems that the problem is in Drupal, not the hosting service. I wonder if it is some module that doesn't do the right thing when told to cache? I am not quite sure how one would go about tracking that down.

So, I turned the cache down to 3 hours. This seems to have gotten it. I agree that the problem seems to lie within Drupal. I have it happening to me over 2 different sites with two totally different themes.

I hope someone sees this post, and clues us into the problem :-0

I love Drupal and have been administrating it for about 2 years, but this one has got me stumped.

We're getting this problem too, hopefully switching off caching will fix it today, thanks for the advice.

This is a critical bug if it is a drupal issue and needs to be looked into.

This is a combination of drupal and godaddy. I shifted the site elsewhere and it now works with caching.

Thanks for the update. I was never able to reproduce on any of my sites, but I don't use godaddy for hosting.

I am not sure that this is specific to godaddy. I tried and tried to fix this issue, but relied on the caching to fix it. Then I needed to switch service providers. When I switched, the problem went away.

I am not sure what the difference is. Both service providers were extremely good, and both are Drupal centered.

I am not a PHP expert, but perhaps this is somewhere in the configuration.

Whatever it is, for anyone that hits this problem in the future, try putting a site on a different service provider, and see if the problem goes away.

If anyone comes across a solution, I would love to know!

I had the same problem on several on my websites - not drupal though.

The website opened OK, but once I closed the window and opened again --- it was blank --- IE only.

I pressed F5, and always blank until all cache was removed.

Now, I am experienced programmer - I tryed all kind of caching - none of it worked.

---

I also tryed to change HTML code (doctypes, etc.) - none had effect, but the tag...

I found out that once the TITLE is changed it displays the page immediately after pressing F5 (without previous cache remove).

Once I changed the TITLE to be short and having NO special characters.

The blank page problem doesn't occur any more, weird huh?

I found out that it also works, when the encoding is changed to UTF-8

AHA!!

header("Content-Type: text/html; charset=windows-1250");

--- and no more blank pages...

I think this is also being set up in APACHE, so that explains somebody solved it by switching to different host provider.

Where do I put the header information?

thanks,
