I am having trouble installing new themes with Drupal 5.
I've uploaded downloaded themes to /sites/all/themes/ and /themes/. But, once these themes are uploaded, they do not show up in my administrative controls.
What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like you are doing
It sounds like you are doing nothing wrong (but you really should confine new themes to sites/all/themes, and not put the same theme in two directories). I assume you have uncompressed the tar or zip files?

i deleted the themes i
i deleted the themes i uploaded to the /themes/ subdirectory.
now they are only in /sites/all/themes/.
i did decompress the original compressed files.
any other ideas?
Did you check the theme
Did you check the theme version carefully? It might be the case that you download the wrong version (6.x for instance). However it's just a wild guess.

i'm going to setup a new database and install another copy of drupal.
i did delete all but one of the main themes, in the /themes/ folder. perhaps that screwed something up.

So glad I read this because until I added the themes folder I wasn't seeing the desired theme.
Once I put it in it appeared as it should inside my browser.
I used the path sites/all/themes/THENEWTHEME
