This is just a cosmetic problem. The user role names do not display properly on the settings page. When you click to expand them the role name displays but when they are collapsed they do not display.

I have stopped fighting the approach. I simply created the html for my front page into the anonymous user block and selected themed. And now with the user permissions in v1.1 it makes it quite feasible to setup a secure site. And on log in users get taken to the appropriate place.

I agree it is a grave useability issue. I am committing a temporary fix in both Head and D6--1-x (see patch attached), but it would have to be reverted when core is fixed.
