Aside from the profile module, I would like to see support for CCK-based profiles-as-nodes, such as those provided by the Bio and Node Profile modules.
I would see this implemented as a supporting module, something like openid_ax_cckmap, potentially with includes or plugins for Bio vs. Node Profile.

I think profiles as nodes is getting less popular in D6 now that Views can list users. Something to consider.

Nope, not at all. Profile module still has its own crazy tables that don't search or index well. But, more than likely, this would be done in those modules rather than here -- e.g. openidax_bio. Leave this here as a reminder in case something needs to be done within this module to enable mapping (I expect mapping ONLY to profile fields will paint us into a corner if not implemented with a certain bit of abstraction).
