Virtual Dedicated Plan question
My current site is on shared hosting plan and performance is getting worse by the day. My site currently is getting over 5000 unique visiters a month and growing (just lunched the site 4 months ago). I'm looking into Virtual dedicated plan and have a question on what does the below means:
256 MB RAM Guaranteed / (1 GB RAM Bursted)
Now, i know the more RAM the faster, but my question is: Compared to a shared hosting, how better is this?!
Thanks for your advice.

5000 visitors/month = 166
5000 visitors/month = 166 visitor/day
You don't need to buy a VPS. I am running some sites with 800 visitors/day whith shared host.

Well it Depends
The quality of hosting depends on the company you go with. I mean liquidweb has high priced compared to almost every shared host out there but they also don't have a single bad review about them(that I have seen). It also even depends on the people you share the server with sometimes.
But the question at hand.
Instead of have split the ram based on whats needed with all the sites on the server you are guaranteed a set amount. Like a shared it could have 4 gb of ram but if all the sites on the server need the ram at the same time its going to go slow because your only going to get a small part of it. This way you have an amount you will always be able to use.
Then the burst is nice because well some times you do get spikes usage.

There site looks very professional - and your right, there price is high for a shared hosting. Thanks for the clarification on the RAM question. The burst was the one throwing me off.

256 MB min but it will work
I've hosted my sites before on 256 MB/1 GB Burst without too many problems, though I eventually went up to 512 MB. You do have to tweak the server a bit though. Every site is unique, but in general you should be OK at that 256 MB (assuming your hosting on a Linux server). If you plan to host more than one site with your server though, you likely would need to consider at least 512 MB. You might want to note though that if you plan on using a control panel to manage your server (CPanel, Plesk, etc)...you're really stretching resources at 256 MB.
My advice to you would be to go with a VPS/VDS, be sure that the hosting plan offers a convenient method for upgrading memory and/or other hosting features. In other words, ask if you start with 256 MB then how difficult is it for you to upgrade though your host provider to more memory at a later date?

Thanks for the info
This is what i was looking for. Yes i will be hosting on Linux server, and i can upgrade to 512 MB for $14.99 a month extra (not a bad deal i think). I think i will be using CPanel, so 512mb will come handy.
Do you mind me asking when did you feel the need to move to a VDS/VPS? I'm still doing somewhat ok on my shared plan. But will need to upgrade in few months if the site growth stayed increasing the way it is now.
Thanks for your thoughts, really appreciate it.

That really depends on you
That really depends on you and what kind of VPS hosting your getting. If its managed there will probably be little difference for you really other than maybe editing some php setting once in awhile.
But if its unmanaged well then it will require a little more work on your side. Which if your willing to learn or have experience setting up a website environment before isn't a problem.
my understanding...
is that with cPanel or Plesk, 512mb is the minimum you'll need - they can be resource hogs.

that would be cPanel. But
that would be cPanel. But it will only be a problem when you are actually using it, right?

VPS hosting
Yes if you are using cPanel it's best to get at least 256mb of guaranteed Ram, preferably more for a busy site. A managed VPS plan will cost $40 or more per month and you'll probably need this unless you have experience in running a VPS.
Here's a list of good value managed VPS web hosting plans which include cPanel/WHM.
