I have this situation: it's the first day of a new month, there is nothing new on the website. The archive calendar is useless since there is no way to switch to the previous month or anywhere else.
An additional link "choose month/year" would be useful.

Susurrus commentedThat link already exists as the title of the table that you can click to visit the archive page and browse around. Not ideal, but it keeps the interface uncluttered.
As you can override the theming of the calendar block, I'm hesitant to add too much more to it. I would, however, make a sort of compromise: Currently only the current month is displayed, even if there are days at the beginning of the first week that belong to the previous month. I think it would make sense to populate these days from the existing month with links. It might make sense to always include a week of the previous month + whatever days flow over to the first week in the next month.

CosminCH commentedYour compromise seems ok for me.
However I must note here that, in my case, I have a custom block table and no link on it.
Susurrus commentedThis has now been implemented in both 5.x and 6.x branches.
If you're experiencing a bug, please open a new issue. (solution is probably that you have the "Archive months" block enabled when you wanted the "Archive calendar" block)
