Making Your Site URL appear as "referral" URL on Another Site's Analytics Software?
siliconvalley1 - May 2, 2008 - 02:50
I want to make sure that links on my website that are to other websites show up for the webmaster of the site as a "URL referral" from my website. I tested this out where I put a link on one of my sites to another site that I own and clicked the link. It doesn't seem to be showing my site as a referral URL. Do I need to do anything extra to make my website show as the referral page when my site users click a link to another web site?

It's not up to you
I'm pretty sure that this is not really under your control.
If I remember correctly it is up to the browser that the person is running since it is the one actually making the request to load the page at the new site.

Correct
Its a header sent by the browser - websites have no control over it.

Hmm.. very strange that its
Hmm.. very strange that its not working for my site, I'm using piwik analytics which isn't the greatest so I'll test it with Google Analytics.
Maybe your browser settings
Maybe your browser settings are configured to block the referrer and just forgot that you did it..

Another possibility
Is that you can configured your log analysis app to ignore traffic from yourself - most tools allow you to do that so you get a more accurate idea of what your visitors are doing without being skewed by your own usage.
But you should really look in your web server access log to see for sure if the referrer header is being sent by the browser.
