I am really new to drupal. This is my first time developing a theme for drupal and I have a question. My template, which I have so far built using xhtml and CSS and Javascript has not been applied to Drupal yet. I've been reading the pages on theming at this website but I'm confused. I don't understand when it is acceptable for me to edit .php files in the template or when not.
If my design relies on .css to place images and style things, then will I ever need to modify a php file? I didn't feel like what I was reading was clear enough.
Also, if I want my front page to look one way and my subpages to look another way, do I need to make subthemes for the subpages?
Thanks for any help you guys might give me,
Becky

It basically works the same
It basically works the same way. XHTML/PHP for structure and content and CSS for styling and appearance. The php allows you to grab content from the Drupal database and place it with your XHTML.
If you can do what you want with CSS, then do it there. If you need to move HTML elements around, add classes and ids, or pull information from the drupal db then you use php.
Some links that were incredibly helpful for me to grok drupal theming:
I would start with the videos & PDF then go to the documentation. It'll make much more sense that way.

Also, if I want my front
The quick answer is yes-- you do that by creating separate *.tpl.php files for the pages you wish to style differently. For the front page I it's page-front.tpl.php. But the videos explain all this.
