I'm planning to work on news portal website, still hesitating with which version of drupal should I go ? , drupal 5 which has lot of modules available or drupal 6

No one can answer this quetsion for you. Beyond that there are already as many as a dozen similar posts.
If you have the modules available to you that you want to use on a Drupal 6.x installation, then Drupal 6.x is an option.
If you don't have access to those modules that you want to use and you don't have the skillset to port them over to Drupal 6.x from Drupal 5.x then Drupal 5.x is the way to go.
Me personally, I'll be building on Drupal 5.x until Drupal 7.x is released, at which time, I will upgrade my sites to Drupal 6.x
