you can't register

Drupal 5.7
Event 5.x-1.0
registering for an event just returns to the main page of the event
there is no confirmation (on-screen/email) and Registration Report is empty
there are no error messages
I know that on clean install of drupal, it works... but not on my production site - how to solve this? :-)
