Newbie-ish dedicated server questions

facelikebambi - May 9, 2008 - 10:47

Hiya

Currently running a Drupal 5.7 site (and a small Wordpress site) on a VPS. Both sites are fairly new and traffic is low, but performance is dire. I've tried some optimisation (this article was helpful) but no real improvement. I suspect the hosts are overloading servers with VPS accounts.

I've realised that for pretty much the same cost, I can get a dedicated server with more RAM, so about to take the plunge.

- I'm fairly ok with editing settings via SSH, but never set up a server before. If I take out an unmanaged server with Plesk, am I letting myself in for steep learning curve getting it configured/optimised for Drupal? Or will Plesk help with the basics, like LAMP installation?

- Ubuntu 7.10, Debian 4, Centos 5.01, Fedora Core 6... which is recommended for Drupal? I'll be sticking with Drupal 5.x for a good while, I think.

Thanks!

Don't do it ...

Do not go to a dedicated server unless you are sure where your bottleneck is (you are suspecting RAM), and you are sure that having more will solve it.

You could go through the pain of moving only to find that you still have the same issue.
