I installed and enabled Viewfield 5.x-1.4 on top of Drupal 5.7, Content 5.x-1.7, and Views 5.x-1.6. I created a new content type and added a view field to it. First, in defining the view field for the content type, I left all of the allowed views unchecked, so that I could select any of them at node creation. When I attempted to create a sample node, I was given no option for views to choose from. I went back to reconfigure the view field in the new content type, and this time checked every currently available view. This time, during node creation, a select box with all the available views did appear, and I selected a view which I knew to be functioning properly on its own, and gave it a valid set of arguments. I submitted the node, and upon viewing the node, the requested view was not displayed. I went to edit the node, and found that the view selection and arguments had not been saved. I repeated this, trying other views and arguments, including views that had no arguments. No matter what, the information for the view would not be saved upon submission. Other node content, like the title and body text, were saved with no issues.

Ah. Problem was with access control. I enabled permission to add and edit the desired node type. Seems to work now.
