Greetings Drualheads :)
We're running a Drupal-based site that is currently using php for its mail duties but have recently been seeing garbage emails being spewed out and want to move it over to our SMTP server (on a remote host). I checked the admin interface but found nothing for switching over to SMTP authentication at all (unless I missed it somewhere). I also found this info but couldn't seem to make it work. Does anyone have a tried and true way of making Drupal use a remote SMTP host for its mail delivery? I'm banging my head against the wall, and in the mean time people are getting garbled emails when they try to sign up for the site. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D

Same problem with remote smtp host...
I have reviewed the information in the link supplied in the previous post regarding the wrapper, but also have had no luck. There is mention in the directions to modify the conf.php file to add the path to the wrapper and class once they are in the /includes directory, but I cannot locate the conf.php file in the Drupal installation.
In a nutshell, I have Drupal running on Apache2, PHP ver. 4.3.10-15, Debian. The remote SMTP server is an internal Exchange server which will then forward the mail to a Postfix gateway. The current setting for php, etc. related to relaying mail to the remote mail server on the webserver are correct for the environment as I was successfully able to send mail with the same settings using Mambo and Postnuke. The only thing different is that I'm testing the Drupal CMS environment now instead of the others.
I really impressed with Drupal over the other CMS's I've tried, but I need to get SMTP working. Does anyone have any additional ideas?
Thanks in advance!

RESOLVED!!!
The file I couldn't find that needed the path to the smtp.class wrapper is /sites/default/settings.php. The wrapper works like a champ; I'm sticking with Drupal.

and create a handbook entry for what you did. I twill save the next guy from having to discover it the hard way. :)

Here is some documention, which could be easily modified into a handbook entry. My step by step instructions are here:

I put together a very detailed handbook entry here http://drupal.org/node/29888. I've tested it on both Postfix and Exchange server gateways.
