I'm trying to develop a theme for Drupal 5.5. I have a full understanding of XHTML and CSS, but a very limited understanding of PHP. The layout and design is already coded in XHTML and CSS. I'm just not getting exactly what I need to do to get it into Drupal from the documentation. I'm using Drupal 5.X
This is an image of how the design is layed out, to give you an idea of what I'm trying to do: http://www.stellarfedora.com/example.jpg
I'm just not getting how to manipulate the regions and everything for what I need, or even how or what code to use. I can't figure out how to make multiple editable content areas. Is there a reference somewhere that I can use as a starting point?
Thanks for any help.

are those sidebars?
well if you know xhtml/css then themeing in drupal is not big deal.... i would suggest you start by using a simple theme that is provided in the themes section.... start off by going through the structure of the theme and start modifying it.... the garland theme is a bit too big for a beginner whereas this is much more simple....
now the two blocks on the left in the image attached, are they the sidebars or blocks?

Try Zen
I realise this isn't exactly what you were asking for help on, but I can recommend Zen as a simple theme to start out with whilst trying to get to grips with theming in Drupal.
Internet Center theme
I would recommend the Internet Center theme.... it is very simple and very customizable.
