I see that this module was released for the first time in January. How viable is it for use now for a project we have to translate a custom content type into 40 different languages? I am worried that there is no community around the module and want to assess its potential. I'm excited for the ease of use it offers and the use of XML to accomplish translations, but just concerned that if something is wrong I won't be able to find answers.
A couple other questions:
* Support for character based and right-to-left languages?
* Works well with Services module? We are using Services to pull data from nodes into a desktop application, and are looking to use this module to translate custom page types that the Services module then gives to the desktop application to translate the entire user interface.

It all depends on what you want to achieve with this module. It can help you a lot, but it's still a development version, which does all that we wanted it to do (and not more).
Currently it's possible to extract all node content (not blocks, menus, taxonomy) into the XML and automatically re-import it into a new node that is linked via the translation module. So if you're talking about translating a custom content type, this would not be a problem.
To answer your other questions:
* It uses unicode encoding, so the character-based shouldn't pose an issue.
* RTL languages: we have no experience in using the module for RTL languages so far
* Services module: same here, no experience in the combination with the Services module. I assume you could easily test this and see what happens (and of course post your feedback here)
