How to Create Front Page

Hi,
I have managed to create a 'Page' that appears on the homepage, but it is cropped to x characters.
How can I show the Page in full? I see there is a section in the admin to change the amount of characters that are shown in pages - but I dont want to change this everytime I want a Page to display in full.
Am I making any sense? :)
