Alright, okay: leaving it for that long was shtoopid, but I had other things on my mind. That said, 4.7.1 has been running two websites without any problems (apart from an occasional mysql error) for, I think, about two years now. So there.
Hey, I'd like to upgrade my current 4.7.1 installation running on OpenSuse 10.0 to the latest and greatest. The system's running two websites off one installation: my personal one, which won't hurt too bad if things go wahoony shaped, and my children's school's website, which has a number of registered users and a large number of (acidfree) images.
Is it at all possible to upgrade this reliably or should I wipe and reload? If the latter, is there any good way to load the data into the new website? Any pointers hints or tips surely appreciated!

Insure that the modules you use on your 4.7.x install area even available for Drupal 5.x
realitically this is biting off quite a bit because of the waiting period.
My suggestion is to export the sites from the server onto your local machine so you can work through any problems that arise between.
I would updated to the last version of 4.7.x
then make a small leap into 5.x territority. be it 5.0 or 5.3 either way, I don't believe you can just jump from where you are, to Drupal 6.x especially if you don't have modules that are ready.
once you get a 5.x install, you will want to update your modules in use to Drupal 5.x and restablize.
Perpare yourself for a lot of trial and error on your local machine. If you don't have alot of trial and error.... GREAT! but if you are prepared for the worst you'll have a much easier time of dealing with the pitfalls.

Install locally and then export a new system?
I see that acidfree isn't on 6, yet. I needed acidfree then because it offered a way to limit certain galleries to registered users only. Can the built-in image handling system do that now, too?
Would it be possible to install drupal on a local vmware image, then copy the whole /srv/www/htdocs + the mysql database to a remote server?

There is no built in image handling in Drupal yet.
I suggest getting to and staying @ Drupal 5.7 until such time as the modules you use are ported to D6.
with regards to yoru last question, I;ve not used that method. I have a WAMP dev setup that I import to from my production server.
