I am about to dig into freelinking and figure out what it will take to make it work with http://drupal.org/project/backlinks

I understand that part of the problem was already discussed away-back in the days of yore:

Also, I am at this point trying to wrap my head around how backlinks module does what it does, and how it could access what freelinking does. I putting this in feature request, but I don't expect freelinking module maintainer to actually work on this. Although, if you can offer suggestions about the above, it would really help me! :-)

Also, this might end up being part of http://drupal.org/project/backlinks I suppose, rather than freelinking

There are some patches for older versions of freelinking at #457776: Freelinking Does not Work with Views Backlinks. Freelinking 3 works with Views 2's backlinks support.
