Using Email Verification

i have yet to get this feature to work. if i register with drupal, it sends the email, i click the 1 time login, then it just refreshes the page when i click the login button, and doesn't forward me on to the change password screen. i think there has to be a way to get this working, so that there are not bot registrations, leaving open registration is dangerous
