I have recently found out that the manufacturing company I work for is considering expanding it's web presence and it's customer relations by offering our customers a way to check on their projects, here in our shop, via the internet.
Since I went and opened my mouth I get to do the research. What I am looking for is a way for our customers to log in and be restricted to just their project information and nothing else. The only information that will need to be available are current/realtime photos and current project notes.
I'm not needing an actual project management solution. Just something that the customer can use to see where things are today without having to constantly fly in from where ever they may be. Since our customers are located around the world, not only are the trips time consuming they are expensive.
So, the question is; can Drupal provide customer log in from a static front page and direct the customer to their project information and their information only? Also, will they be able to have access to archived information on their project and leave comments?

It can, but...
It almost certainly can be made to this this (it's a pretty flexible system) but from what I can tell it is going to require some work to make it work like that. Whether it is worthwhile would depend on how many of Drupal's other features you want to use. It would also depend on how secure you need it to be.
My first impression is that a dedicated solution might be a better choice. It would depend on the specifics, though.
