Can XHTML be used in Drupal 5.x?

Hi,

I know that HTML and CSS works fine in drupal 5.x. A developer asked me if he should do the development in XHTML, but I'm not sure it's supported. I've read some articles on XHTML, but it did not make me clear if drupal has issues supporting this?!
