Can we control "who's online"?

Hi there,
I just wanna ask whether we could control on who's online? Can the members choose to appear online or offline?
In addition, does Drupal has any module similar to Messenger module (since it has been abondoned)? So that, members can chat online.

Apart from stating the obvious (have a look through the list of modules ;-) http://drupal.org/node/206666#DRUPAL-5), if there isn't one already then it would be fairly easy (once you know how to create modules) to create a small one that provided 2 blocks:
- one to allow a user to change their status
- another based on the existing Who's online block but filtered by users' online/offline status setting. There are also some chat modules IIRC.
