WebFM & Drupal

Hi,

I'd be interested to hear from anyone using this module.
I'm considering using it as a document repository for a project I'm working on.
There will be over 100,000 pdfs in the repository.
The WebFM module seems like the best choice for what we need as it integrates well with the Drupal Book module.

Has anyone used this module for a project of a similar size? What has your experience been?
I've read that there has been performance issues in the past when there were a lot of files being managed by WebFM, is this the case or are a lot of issues like this down to server and network performance?
At the moment we are planning on running the site on a local machine(s) but there might be a need to get it online later.

Any feedback is appreciated.

John

I have c. 1000 pdfs with WebFM, which generally works well and look smart. There are four minor issues I have:

1) Some users report that it just doesn't work. I suspect they have over zealous pop-up blockers or something and the download link doesn't appear when they click a file.. I 'm not sure yet. I've just emailed them the files instead. Less IT-literate users with problems give up and go and play golf instead.

2) The WEBFM upload form only supports single files, so you have to upload by FTP. But the WebFM interface only allows you to modify filenames or delete files where you've uploaded through its interface. It could be just me.. and it may not be a problem for you anyway.

3) You can't select multiple files for download at one go. If a user wants to download fifty files at once they are going to be upset as it's a pain to do them one at a time. As a result I zipped up multiple related pdfs into single zip files.

4) Some user roles see a duplicated file tree box. It still works, but it looks untidy.. I'm not bothered by it, but have added text to say "yes, I know about this.. don't tell me if you see it" . See a thread on the module's forum about this.

Thanks for reply

Hi,

I'm very impressed with WebFM too, the interface is excellent. And the integration with the book module wins the day.
I'm hoping that the amount of files won't be an issue. We're running tests now with about 4-500 files, but as your experience shows this shouldn't be a problem.

I've been playing around with this a little and might have an answer to your third issue.
When I upload directories or files directly to the WebFM Root Directory, I can then go into the WebFM browser interface, go to the directory I just uploaded too and then click on an icon which allows me to - "Recursive add files to database", after doing this I'm able to edit the name, delete, etc...
I'm using XAMPP as the server on a Win XP pc.
Maybe your issue is related to permissions/ownership for files uploaded via ftp?

Thanks again for the feedback
