Steps to recreate:
1. Create new node (that has a Pathauto definition). In 'URL Path settings', 'Automatic alias' is checked by default, and the path is greyed out. Enter values for required fields and click 'Submit'.
2. Click 'Edit' to edit the node and scroll down to the 'URL Path Settings'. You can see the path that Pathauto has assigned to the node in the greyed-out box (e.g., 'frequently-asked-questions'). Uncheck 'Automatic alias' and enter a custom path, e.g. 'resources/faq'. Click Submit.
3. Click 'Edit' again to edit the node and scroll down to 'URL Path settings'. Problem #1 appears here: the 'Automatic alias' checkbox is CHECKED and the text box is greyed out again, when I would expect it to remember that I had inserted a custom/manual path (and to leave the checkbox unchecked and the text box editable).
4. Don't do anything to the path values, but still click 'Submit'.
5. Click 'Edit' again to edit the node and scroll down to 'URL Path settings'. Problem #2 appears here: the text in the greyed-out has now reverted back to the automatically generated path ('frequently-asked-question').

gregglesThanks for the detailed bug report. I believe this is a duplicate of #180440: If an alias is manually created, don't automatically replace it on edit. Prior to submitting a new issue please be sure to search the queue for an existing issue.

Adam_M commentedActually, this isn't a duplicate of #180440.
#180440 was a feature request, requesting this feature which I am reporting a bug in. The feature was apparently implemented in 2.2. I am now reporting that there is a bug in this feature.
(As one comment in #180440 says, "New bugs should be in their own issues").

gregglesPlease read the rest of the thread and especially http://drupal.org/node/180440#comment-728092 where I note that the feature was removed because it didn't work very well. Until that feature goes in, this bug should be recategorized as a feature and should be a duplicate of it. right?

Indeed.
Too bad; it's a brilliant feature!

gr33nman commentedIs there an estimate of when this 'feature' will be fixed for version 6? My users are not likely to remember to uncheck the box every time they have to edit. Editable links from other pages start failing if we don't leave permalinks the same as the title.
This is extremely frustrating - especially because so many users like descriptive titles and short permalinks. Any help is greatly appreciated.
