For example, I need a field which tells me if a user is subscribed to a given group. See 'email' column at http://groups.drupal.org/groups/my (requires login)

Ok, I'll think I'll add a generic 'node' subscription field.

However that won't make a difference if you are subscribed to the group node itself for updates/comments or if you are subscribed to the group (to posts on that group). So if you need a more fine grained one, it should be in the og_notifications module.
