Howdy All,

I've created a Drupal site with a (near) custom theme. Themes are an ordeal, but it was a fun ordeal! I could use some feedback and word on how the site looks using browsers I have no current access to, like Safari on Mac and Konquerer/Mozilla/Firefox on Linux. I had some issues with content getting pushed down below the sidebar, but Goodbasic's fix seemed to fix that.

RoadUP is about road trips, travel, serendipity, and exploration. I'll be doing podcasts, but not via Drupal feeds. The site is locked against registrations until it's ready for prime-time (this weekend,) but whatever feedback you can provide in the meantime would be appreciated. Please let me now if anything looks odd, unreadable, or otherwise not good.

BTW, a big THANK YOU to the community for providing very helpful info and being patient with us noobs. And hey, if you have any interesting road trip stories drop 'em off at RoadUP.

Cheers,

Jim

The site looks nice, but as a first time visitor I can only guess what the site is about. I'd consider adding a missing statement in a visible spot.

hi mojave,
Iam ganesh doing my MSc cmpsc in chennai.
Your website is looking good especially the four images are really portraying what you are trying to say but the top most widest image can be made little richer you know. The website goes little bit down also be'cose of the four icons like pod,RSS,etc. The "user login" should come up for better appearance. The "Search" window also should be kept down.
I am not sure how far I am correct but I adde my own comments.See I am fresher for this drupal, will you able to tell me how far can we use drupal for setting up a simple website of our own?.

Well done Jim,

Don't change a thing!

It's fantastic as it is...simple, within a few seconds you know exactly what the site is and is about...and it looks great.

Thanks for the feedback so far. As I add more content it should be clearer what the site is about. So far I just wanted to make sure the site isn't breaking when viewed.

Actually, the pictures under the banner will be replaced with a small flash app whose main job will be to play interactive summeries of interesting road trip routes and other material. When it's not being used, though, it will rotate relevant info about the site, pictures like the ones there, etc. So when the site is ready with that and the story headers you'll get the picture pretty quickly.

Even so, I'll see what else I can do to get the point across without relying so much on the flash. I'll try the suggestions posted so far and see what works best.

Thanks again, folks!

The site looks good.

I've noticed a few things that bug me:

  1. Some of the pages look strange because there is no header above the text. e.g. scrolling up from the bottom of this page this page feels odd.
  2. The "Road Rules" forum stickies show up with "breaking news" as a background image, which seems out of place.
  3. "The First Step" has a "read more" link... that doesn't show any more
roadup’s picture

Ack! That's right, it didn't occur to me the Breaking News background would appear on all sticky posts. I need to figure out how to differentiate between them...or at least come up with a more general souding header.

Thox: I don't quite understand the your first comment. I took the headers off some of the pages because they didn't seem to fit, but if it is indeed distracting usability-wise I should look at putting them back.

Other than that, thanks for the feedback...thanks to everyone. As always, the more critical eyes the better.

Cheers,

Jim

Ahhh to be as creative and talented with the themes as many folks are on here! I'm still learning but would love to be able to create a custom theme!!

Looks great Jim!

Creating basic custom themes is not difficult at all...just time consuming. In Drupal, CSS is king! And there are a lot of things to create styles for. I'd say 60-70% of my time was spent just tweaking styles so that they fit the site design. I'm not saying that's bad or undesireable (quite the contrary)...just a trait of the tool, so to speak.

Rest assured, if you can design a static web site you can turn it into a Drupal theme. After drafting the design in Photoshop I used the style sheet from box_grey as a guide to just what I should be setting styles for, and noticed coding placements from blix and PHPTempalte default in putting together the page and node pages. Then...a week+ worth of tweaking.

In fact, I'm still tweaking it. It's probably more a polishing job now than anything else. Once I learn things like hooks and heavier theme coding techniques I'll truely bring the theme to life!

Awesome site! I really liked it from the start, fast loading, simple features. Compared to alot of blogs I see (and I see many on blogexplosion) this is in a league of its own.

I will be coming back for sure.

Now for the hardest part: keep the content flowing :)

If I'm fortunate enough it won't just be a blog. I'd like everyone and anyone to contribute to the site; I tend to see it's potential more as a highly interactive e-zine. The focus will be more on different stories, interviews, interactive (flash) content, and podcasts....with my blog being only a small piece.

Gee, I'm not aiming for much now, am I? :-)
