This is a port of a patch for drupal 6.dev which actually takes a slightly different approach. I wonder if this approach is better or not, even for the drupal 6.x patch.

New features are no longer being added to Drupal 5.x. Since this appears to be fixed in 6.x, I am closing this instead of moving up the version number.
