Any opinions on the two CMSs? I know this might be like asking a Bostonian who their favorite baseball team is but I would love an honest opinion.

Does wordPress offer community mods?

Well, what are you goals with web development? If you just want a blog site then wordpress is the way to go, there's no sense in dealing with the drupal learning curve just to write a few articles but if you are trying to build large scale websites with a lot of functionality then Drupal is definitely the way to go.

If you want to do simple bloging than wordpress..if you want a decent website with more options than 101% Drupal. Drupal can be used as both blog and static website.
