I currently maintain somewhere around 16 sites. Of those, only four have Views, and only two have CCK. There are a great many people who do not use either. Please rethink forcing people to use them.
If you really must back out of this module, I would consider taking it over. I already use the concept in another module.

mgiffordThis is certainly a lot simpler to setup than views.. probably a lot lighter on the server load too..

TSE commentedi also would be happy if this module would be continued. Using it on nearly every site, where only few of them have a need for cck or views.

francoud commentedI agree, this module solved a lot of problems for me... views is a good tool, but weight module is much more easy to use - expecially because it allows users of a specific role to modify the weight. I'm using this module in several sites and loosing it will give me a lot of problems :(
I'm not expert php programmer but I will give my little contribution if someone wants to take charge of this module.

I already have fixes for all the issues except these:
#87551: Administer node weights with filtered list - not applicable to 5.x?
#145674: Weight module cant update with Acid Free multiple list + Patch for 5.x - don't know if this is a problem any more.
#305679: port to drupal 6 please - code available in the issue.
