In v1, I used this to show related items in a block, excluding the item that serves as context.

Example: The pages shows a node of type band (the context), with a box in the margin that lists all bands related to the context. The list should not include the band in context.

As far as I know it was only ever available for nid; it's now available for many 'numeric' arguments, and it's called 'exclude' or something of that sort.
