If you need multi language,

If you need multi language, Drupal is the winner. Because in Drupal 6 core has include multi language support. But Joomla not yet have this feature. Joomfish, Joomla 1.5 plugins for multi language not yet release the stable version.

What do you want to build? You can check the features you need in both CMS to choose the most suitable for you :-)

I agree, the question should

marcvangend - May 23, 2008 - 08:14

I agree, the question should not be 'which is better?' (although I know the answer you would get here on drupal.org :-)) but 'which is better for you?'

Can you tell us what you expect from a cms? What should it do 'out-of-the-box'? Do you want to develop your own theme or do you want do download and use a ready made theme? What kind of information are you storing in your database, how will it be added, how will it be displayed? Do you want full control (occasionally writing some php yourself) or do you want quick and easy development with less control?

Like the others have said,

Like the others have said, it depends on which one suits your needs the best.

I have used both and find Joomla very good for create articles etc where as Drupal is much more customisable, although themeing in Joomla is a lot easier (although that may change once I dig in to Drupal a bit more).

Drupal Usually...

AllRoCol - May 23, 2008 - 23:18

I did a ton a research before choosing Drupal over Joomla. Now the bigger question is Drupal 6 or 5. Since I am not in a rush, I chose 6 and I'll await stable versions of things I need.

Anyway... Here is what I concluded:
Faster - Joomla out of the box, Drupal with modules and long time use. Clearly Drupal wins.

Modules - Joomla has a bunch of Wordpress like hacks and some decent modules. Too many corporate ones though. Drupal has most of what it needs right out of the box, with both 5 and 6 having a wide array of nice modules that have a lot of power. I should also note that it takes forever to make your way around Joomla looking for modules and for finding them once you install them in it. Joomla has a very poor ability to handle modules, which it actually breaks up into 4 categories and forces you to try and find them.

Community - Drupal is like a really smart community that wants every single project (Modules, theme, etc...) to be maximized. Joomla has a community full of people looking to create 5 minutes sites, but still has some respectable members. Drupal is harder to use, so you have to assume smarter community.

Ease of use: Joomla can make a wicked fast site, Drupal takes a little while to learn. Joomla sort of wins... You see, Drupal is actually easier once you get it down, since Joomla is very counter-intuitive, but you can make a nice site a lot faster in Joomla.

Themes: Joomla wins with a ton of themes, too many pay ones though. However... Drupal has made many leaps and bounds with themes in a short period of time, so it is only a matter of time before it jumps ahead.

Updates: Drupal is updated more... Funny thing is that Joomla 1.5 is constantly compared to Drupal 5.x, but with Drupal almost always winning. Thing is... Drupal 6.x is a lot better than 5.x, yet Joomla is still stuck on 1.5. I have never seen Joomla as being a project I trusted to always be updated.

Usage: Joomla is used more, but for less. The full speed site building is nice, but then the CMS becomes slow and it becomes hard to maintain and update. Drupal is used by people looking for something more advanced. Chances are if you have to ask the question between the two, then Drupal is for you. If you don't care, then Joomla serves that sort of purpose.

Now side notes:
Joomla is great for:
Eccommerce
Easy to use terms that you are used to (Drupal has a different name for everything, it is like watching Dune).
Single site, barely community based installs.

Drupal is great for:
Multiple sites, especially building up a community.
Swiss army knife type capabilities when dealing with different types of sites.
Better code base... At least that is what I hear from most people around the internet.

Just my thoughts...

Nice comparaison, thanks!

Nice comparaison, thanks!

I haven't wanted to try

Steven_NC - May 25, 2008 - 01:36

I haven't wanted to try Joomla 1.5 and it may have some good features, but I'm ok with Drupal 5 (I need some as yet un-upgraded modules) and looking forward to D6. If you can build the functionality you need with core and contributed for Drupal 6, go for it. I think you'll be much happier in the long run.

I tried Joomla 1.x and it worked well for what it does with a standard installation. But once you try to get much farther it really forces you to think in weird way, at least for me. Drupal works in a reasonably linear fashion. After some use it makes sense and nothing has to be unlearned.

I have a friend who's programmer recommended they use Joomla. They are 11 months into a 4 week job. I'm glad to be working in Drupal. I'm no pro, but my work is progressing.

well im a total Newbie.. and

Mangaforce - May 25, 2008 - 01:43

well im a total Newbie.. and have tried Joomla.. and found it to be lacking in many areas.. the main one.. it doesnt have a Menu system. you basically have a "filing cabinet" effect with it and not a lot else.. Took me weeks to get anywhere with it.. The back end is a pain in the ass and confussing. You have to set everything up twice.

If you want to do anything worthwhile you have to pay for modules.. here i am at drupal a week later and almost finished my first site.

Drupal rules supreeme over Joomla ! from a newbie perspective

Both will allow you to build any website you want

If I would list some learning points for Drupal it would be the administration interface of J1.5. Finding content and managing content in Joomla is a breeze. On the other hand Drupal's taxonomy is an excellent feature. Wordpress 2.5 has this down very well, in my opinion. The J1.5 administration is easier to use for normal everyday people who have to work with the content. The Drupal administration is a lot quicker speed wise.

Learning to theme in Joomla I thought was a pain. Constantly running into predefined things. But I found it easier to learn than Drupal theming. For example I lose a lot of time trying to figure out how to do design things in Drupal. On the other hand it is my experience that Drupal will allow you easier customization of separate pages and the way you want to show data. So something to be said for both.

Both communities in my opinion are excellent, friendly and very helpful. The Drupal forum layout takes some getting used to, but once you know it, it works just as well as the Joomla forum. Whereby I do have to say that I am somebody that for every question I ask I try to solve one. I also search for queries before I post. You'll notice that this is greatly appreciated in the communities.

Overall I love both content management systems. My ideal would be a best of both worlds of both CMS's with a look at Wordpress 2.5.

Hope it helps. :-)

thanx all of you
