Do any modules you know of have NING or Facebook (social networking) type functionality?

Thats a very open ended question. many of the modules in the downloads area can be incorportated into a social networking site.

Is there something a tad more specific you can ask ?

What modules do you suggest for creating subdomains from Drupal and how to handle then in the same database and share users across sub domains?

There is only one module I am aware of that may help here the domain.module

however, you can set up subdomains manually and share tables using settings.php too (My preferred method)
There is an abundance of documentation that can be found about mutisites using google or drupal search.

organic groups offers the foundation of social networking. Look into it. Another couple to look at are buddylist2 or user-relationships. Creating a site with the functionality the big boys have is possible with drupal but it takes a lot of different modules and considerable custom coding to get them to all work together the way that you envision.
