I am in the process of upgrading from D5 to D6, but for various resons i have to split the site and upgrade only part of it.

i set up a new virgin database for the d6 section, and uploaded D6 and tha avaliable D6 modules but on trying to open the D6 part of the site i get a screen

Drupal already installed
To start over, you must empty your existing database.
To install to a different database, edit the appropriate settings.php file in the sites folder.
To upgrade an existing installation, proceed to the update script.
View your existing site.

Clicking on 'View your existing site' puts me into the new d6 site no problem

How do i suppress this screen?

I take it that you went through the installation process? In which case you will only see this screen if you go through the install.php screen again. If you go via index.php, it should be fine.

I am not sure how a virgin database gave you the option for viewing an existing site. Did you do something else which you didn't mention, for using data from the old site?

i have used data from the existing site but copied it over by hand from the http source into the new pages

So, you are saying that D6 is now an existing site, but when you visit its URL it automatically tries to run the installer again instead of index.php?

What is the site's URL like? Is it just http://www.site2.com?
What is the URL of the "View your existing site" link, which takes you to your new site correctly? (when you hover the mouse over that link and look at the browser's status bar).

The problem was with the address I had in my favourite folder and now seems to have been cleared

Thanks for your caring
