Has anyone put together a trial patch on this for Drupal 6? I know you stated that first ImageCache would need to be done for D6 - and though there are no official releases it looks very close - we have been implementing it on our dev site for a bit now.

Yes, it's close, but there is not even an alpha release. The nature for the code is to change.. and this module is so dependent on imagefield, that it will definitely take much more time to write and test a patch for the existing imagefield d6 and again for the final imagefield d6.
All that said, patches are welcome - if you manage to get it working with imagefield d6, post a patch here, it will definitely help.
I will not publish a d6 release until there is some imagefield d6 release - it will be impossible to handle support requests and bug reports otherwise.
