How can I turn off URL field settings?

For some reason (perhaps a module install that I lost track of ...) drupal has started requiring me to enter a url alias on each node page that I edit or create. I have path module enabled and I have tried clean URL's in the enabled and disabled settings. No help.
I have not been able to find an admin / config setting that causes this to be required or optional.
Any ideas? I'm stumped.
