What are you using? I use 5. All I have to do is go to the Theme administrator and then edit the template and set in what content types should the text "Posted by" appear. I don't know if this is the same for D6, but I guess it should me similar.
I am not sure if you really mean edit the template? I suppose you mean, one should click the Configure-tab under Themes and uncheck the content types that should not display the "Posted by" phrase.
There is no need to edit template files to just disable the phrase.
