With this module, will it be possible to create imagecache thumbnails inline via imagefield cck fields, and insert these into the body of a node using a filter mechanism, or even better, using some sort of pop-up selector or autocomplete field?

No, that's not possible within the limits of the filtering system. You cannot currently have context-aware filters.
