DesignBump.com just launched – it is a social media/news site dedicated to designers. What is the best way to find relevant design-related content quickly and easily? Put the searching and sharing in the hands of the community. With your help we can categorize the huge amount of design-related content available on the web into neat and easy to navigate pages of articles in order of importance/relevance.

History

With so many opensource CMS and blog systems available, more and more people are creating and designing their own websites. While there are a few good places to look for design related material they either are too large and barely touch on all the quality design related material out there (digg.com) or they are limited by the system they are built on (pligg sites). With a Drupal powered site, as the site and community grows so can the functioning of the site.

Modules

DesignBump.com was pieced together with the powerful drigg module package by Tony Mobily as well as many modules for the social aspects (including buddylist, invite, favorites, and private messages).

Goals

There is still a lot of functionality I want to add to the site. And, hopefully, as the site grows I will be able to add some of the other powerful features drupal allows. Some possible future features include; customized profiles, galleries and showcases, and a forum.

Feel free to sign up and give me some feed back!

Thanks,

John

I appreciate it, took me a few weeks to work out all the bugs. I don't think it shows 100 percent in ie6, but it works well in the latest safari, opera, firefox, and ie.

A nice site - have had a good look around. The links are quality, and it seems that you're screening them also which is good. On a few pages (such as About) it claimed i was logged out though, when i wasn't - and the next page is ok.

Looking forward to seeing it with a few more links on.

I fixed the problem with the about page. Thanks for letting me know. That's why I need testers ;^). We are getting about 5 new links a day right now and hopefully we will be gaining more as the site grows so we should have a good number of links in a short time. We are also working out deals with some other design related blogs/sites and will be actively promoting the site over the next few months.

Thanks again for checking it out,

John

This is a very cool site. Great idea to have the titles directly link out the other site. You might want to have them open in a new window so people don't perhaps link away completely from the site.

Where did you get the "cloud tag" module code? I love that.

It's a great idea.

I appreciate the comment. I thought about having the titles open a new window, but I personally don't enjoy when other sites do that (especially with current browsers allowing for you to choose to open in a new tab) so I decided against it. Digg and Reddit have managed to keep their users even though they don't open their links in a new window. I also have it set so if you click the score/vote count it will take you to that nodes page for commenting and the like.

But I suppose I will be monitoring the click thru rates and retention of visitors before I finalize my decision on that.

The tag cloud comes from the tagadelic module which you can download here: http://drupal.org/project/tagadelic. Just install it, and if your posts have tags, when you enable the tagadelic block you will have a tag cloud. Simple.

Thanks for the feed back!

I've voted for several and it hasn't taken me to their page - it has simply adjusted the vote on the current page.

Also: i added two links yesterday, and they still show up as "queued". What criteria is being used to promote / make popular / publish (all three terms seem to be used in the site)...?

Voting isn't supposed to take you to the nodes page (clicking the green score board with the number in it will though). Links will show up as "queded" or "upcoming" until they receive enough votes/karma from the users to make it to the front page. Just like digg or reddit.

Thanks for checking out the site!

I love what you did with the layout and design. A lot of the sites I have seen using the drigg module just stick to the default theme so they all look the same. Keep up the good work!

I spent a lot of time trying for that retro look, hopefully it came out well. I have had good feedback from the design community so far and have had great growth in the last few weeks.

What kind of server are you guys running in your initial stage of the website? You're competitor is personal friend of mine ,Andrew, who started designfloat.com. Very similar sites, but he is running Pligg.

Nice job on the theme, reason I ask about the server is because I'm considering MediaTemple as well, if you are in fact with them and the grid hosting.

Great site and I wish you tremendous success.

designbump’s picture

Yeah, DesignFloat was definitely an inspiration for DesignBump. I am trying to do a few things a bit differently though. I am using mediatemple and the shared grid hosting. The hosting is great and it allows me all the resources I need except for the databases. They get a bit overloaded and I was told I have to pay 20 extra a month to have access the config for them. Other than that it has worked well for me.

Thanks for the compliment and I hope that helped a bit.

Great site. Nice design too. Can I ask how you've created the tabs in the comments section? For example, on the nodes like http://www.designbump.com/GraphicDesign/Turn_On_Your_Creativity_Light_Ef... it has "comments", "who voted" and "related links". How's this done?

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Sorry, just noticed this comes as default with Drigg! Still a nice site though :-)

My new EasySnoozing, Nursing and BusinessEgghead websites on D7!
