mass mailing solution needed... urgently!

I need a mass mailing solution for my drupal powered website... that provides support for users being able to subscribe (to any no of newsletters) and unsubscribe too.

drupal.org uses simplenews.module

There are others in the downloads area too.

Pardon the bump, but my company is soon going to be on the lookout for a Drupal-friendly mass-mailing solution as well.

For potentially intensive tasks like mass mailing (which may involve sending out thousands of customized messages one at a time), I tend to be wary of solutions which try to do it all in PHP. Is this wariness unfounded in the case of Simplenews?

How about customizing messages with the addressee's name and a one-click "click here to unsubscribe" link? Or automatically unsubscribing addresses which bounce messages? Or default templates for each mailing list? Can Simplenews or any other alternatives handle these things well, or at least provide an environment where I could sanely implement them myself?

The ultimate goal is to build a manager service like Cooler Email or Vertical Response and pitch it as an added feature to our clients, as well as possibly sell subscriptions for use to those who are otherwise not our clients. I really know jack about this sort of stuff, though, so I'm going to have to learn as I go.

Should I be considering solutions which work outside of PHP, like ezmlm (which has its own Drupal module)?
