Is there anyway without modifying the core code to allow your custom node type to NOT be indexed?

This post here in issues seems to be able to do it, but that involves modifying the core code.

Hi Jamestamr,
You may use the modules views and views fast search to achieve this.

Thank you. I haven't set up Views yet, but was planning on using it anyway, I will wait until I have set up views to play around with the search stuff.
