What is the correct way to upgrade a module, say from views-alpha to views-beta?
I always just remove the .../modules/[name] directory and then untar the tarball of the new release.
Is this the right way to do it, or is there something I am missing?

Run upgrade.php
It doesn't matter how the module gets there, it just needs to be in the right place. Once it's there, do make sure you run upgrade.php.
