I'm not sure how this happened, because I'm pretty sure it worked perfectly at one point or another. Well the navigation link for the Private Messaging system does not display when an authenticated user is logged in. It is only displayed when moderator or administrator is logged in. I checked permissions, block settings, etc, can't find why it's not being displayed. In the Menu Settings I've disabled it, but I read somewhere that's what I'm supposed to do if I don't want it to be expanded. You see, the private messaging navigation comes standard as a tree with sub-links. I didn't want that for my users. I just wanted the 'My inbox (2)' Link, and a custom 'Compose Message' link right underneath it (which works just fine). But I only get 'Compose Message' under authenticated user. In my User Access control panel, there I cannot find any differences amongst the user roles that would isolate the issue here. Can I get some help?

NEVERMIND
Figured it out. In my testuser1 account I had, for some reason, unchecked the 'Allow' link in the Private Message Settings, which of course is on the user's Edit Profile page. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem as you. But now it's on D7 with Advance Forum & Privatemsg.
It took me 6 hours, in D7 you need to go to admin/people/permissions and check "Private messages" setting for authenticated user.
Thank you for leading me there & hope that this help the next guy.
