I have installed backup_migrate but when I try to use it I get

* Unable to create or write to the save directory 'files/backup_migrate'. Please check the file permissions on your files directory.
* Unable to create or write to the save directory 'files/backup_migrate/manual'. Please check the file permissions on your files directory.
There is no files directory
backup_migrate is set to 777

What is wrong

So you say there is no files directory, or did the message say that?
