It would be nice to have an option to set the initial values of the counter. For example, I would like to be able to initialize counter with the AWStats statistics of my site.

Great idea! I think to insert any records manually into Counter table but using initial values is more simple. Now version 5.x-1.4 has settings for initial values of Site Counter and Unique Visitor. In this version user can also set custom text value for "Site counter since". Give it try.
