In the screenshot of the theme I see that there is a wide right-column (shaded) over the two columns. However, when I enable the theme, I do not see that wide column. Is that enabled on the current version or that is still in progress?

That is the mission statement, although a wide column could be put there I suppose. To do this simply find a region that you are not using (e.g. header-region or maybe just one of the sidebars), and place it below the mission statement in page.tpl.php, and then apply the #mission styles in style.css to that region.
