There is a long standing critical bug (http://drupal.org/node/146955#comment-877051) on the module and at least one enhancement that seem ready to be committed(http://drupal.org/node/132233), but there has been no new releases for over a year.

I just saw http://drupal.org/node/222669 (Rewriting mediafield as a filefield plugin) so i know you have thought about this module. I fully agree with the direction of the thread and like the look of http://drupal.org/project/audio_filefield . However I would still like to see these patches applied to make the currently published code more usable out of the box, perhaps also inform people of these new directions that are being thought about.
